Wael Shawki | Exhibition

This winter, the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin has scheduled a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the Egyptian artist Wael Shawki (Alejandria, 1971). The exhibition, made up of audiovisual pieces, sculptures and puppets, is an invitation to rethink and rewrite the history of the Crusades, this time from the perspective of the Arabs. There are three audiovisual pieces that are presented in the exhibition and each one of them is shown in a closed room that takes us back to the architecture of the mosques and the Arab world. The Horror Show file (2010), Cabaret Crusades: The Path to Cairo (2012) and The Secrets of Karbala (2015) tell us through different historical moments, the bloody story of the Crusades to the Holy Land and the cultural clash between the western civilization and the Islamic world. The historical characters that give life to these events are the puppets that the artist has made, with a recreation of costumes and scenery that is outstanding. These puppets are presented in the exhibition in a careful display that invites the visitor to observe all its details and nuances.

Este invierno, el Castello di Rivoli Museo D’Arte Contemporanea de Turín ha programado una exposición retrospectiva dedicada al artista egipcio Wael Shawki (Alejandria, 1971). La exposición, compuesta por piezas audiovisuales, esculturas y marionetas, es una invitación a repensar y a reescribir la historia de las Cruzadas, esta vez vista desde el lado de los árabes. Son tres las piezas audiovisuales que se presentan en la exposición y cada una de ellas se muestra en un habitáculo cerrado que nos retrotrae a la arquitectura de las mezquitas y al mundo árabe. The Horror Show file (2010), Cabaret Crusades : the Path to Cairo (2012) y The Secrets of Karbala (2015) nos cuentan a través de diferentes momentos históricos, el relato sangriento que supuso las Cruzadas a Tierra Santa y el choque cultural entre la civilización occidental y el mundo islámico. Los personajes históricos que dan vida a estos sucesos, son las propias marionetas que el mismo artista ha realizado, en una ambientación de espacios, vestuario y escenografía que son dignos de elogio. Estas marionetas están presentes en la exposición mediante un cuidadoso display que invitan al visitante a observar todos sus detalles y matices.
